Ihsaan Bassier
I am currently (2018) studying towards a PhD at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst (USA), after completing my undergraduate in mathematics, statistics and economics with honours year in economics at the University of Cape Town. My work focuses on South Africa, looking at labour, the political economy of development, and the interactions between class, race and gender. My approach is framed by my technical foundations, my pluralist training (including Marxist, feminist and mainstream economics perspectives), and my collaboration with unions and civil society organisations. Other work includes estimating the effect of firm power (profitability, monopsony and monopoly) on wages, and estimating the impact of the 2013 agricultural minimum wage.
